Medicare rebates and item numbers for podiatrists
On the 29th of March, the Minister for Health Greg Hunt released stage 4 of the temporary MBS item numbers for Telehealth – these now include Allied Health services including podiatry. These item numbers are effective from 8am today, Monday the 30th of March.
VIDEO CONSULTATION PODIATRY
Why a Video Consultations?
Video Consultations, in the context of the Australian healthcare setting, can be defined as the use of videoconferencing technologies to conduct a medical consultation where audio and visual information is exchanged in real time.
As the COVID-19 situation evolves, the option of telehealth consults for podiatry patients, especially those with chronic conditions, is becoming increasingly relevant and important. Whilst due to the manual nature of podiatry, this will not be possible for all patients, it will be possible and helpful for some.
Medibank Rebates
On Thursday 9 April 2020 Medibank announced telehealth rebates for a range of Allied Health services – including podiatry. Rebates will be available from 14th April – 30th September for existing patients. New patients will also be entitled to rebates but the preference is that they will have a referral from GPs where possible. The rebates will be for consults only and will have the same rebate amount as face to face services.
Medibank as the first health insurer to offer rebates for podiatry consults via Telehealth and are hopeful other health insurers will follow.
