Dr Dan Bates

Dr Dan Bates BSc. B.Med. (Sports Medicine Registrar)
Dr Bates competed a science degree with an honours thesis in Exercise induced Asthma at the University of Melbourne in 1995. He then studied medicine at the University of Newcastle completing his degree in 2001. Dr Bates served as a registrar for a number of years before pursuing his passion for sport, specialising in Sports Medicine. He has a special interest in groin pain management, overuse injuries in young athletes, boxing medicine and the use of cell therapies for management of tendinopathy and osteoarthritis.

Dr Bates has been involved in a number of elite sporting organisations including the Sydney Swans, Melbourne Victory and the Eastern Ranges TAC U/18 Teams.

Dr Bates is also currently the team doctor at North Melbourne Football Club.

Stem Cell Therapy:

Dr Bates’ current research is in the use of autologous, non-expanded adipose-derived stem cells for the treatment of chondral lesions and osteoarthritis. He has four case series focusing on chondral defects of the knee, and osteoarthritis of the knee, hip and shoulder. The case series are following pain, functional and MRI outcome of therapy. In December 2011 Dr Bates and the Australian Catholic University will commence a double blind randomized control trial comparing hyaluronic acid to adipose derived stem cells for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.  Primary outcomes are pain, function, quality of life and MRI evidence of chondral regeneration.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Dr Bates has extensive clinical experience with the use of Platelet Rich Plasma with the treatment of well over 300 patients. In conjunction with Australian Catholic University, he is performing a double blind randomized control trial comparing PRP to hyaluronic acid for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.
